English Language Learners (ELLs) whose native language is not English, pass a screening interview, can commit to one-year of class attendance, are not currently attending nor associated with a college or university and have not been previously removed from the program. This program is designed to assist residents in obtaining/retaining employment and to enter post-secondary training.
No, classes are non-credit and part of continuing adult education.
At this time, there is no charge for classes. You may be asked to purchase a textbook.
You must provide a current, government-issued identification card and proof of legal status in the U.S. such as a Visa or a permanent resident (green) card. Please note that some Visa types are not accepted. You must also reside in the New River Valley and surrounding areas.
Class placement is not guaranteed. If you pass the screening interview, you may be offered a class placement based on your screening. Classes are limited in size and run on an open-enrollment basis. Once classes are filled, you will be put on a waiting list. If you are offered a class placement, you are expected to attend the class. You may be replaced by someone on the waiting list if you do not attend on a regular basis.
Classes are offered at the Beginner, Low-Intermediate, High-Intermediate and Advanced levels.
